Palmer House

Sauk Centre, Minnesota

Ralph and Christena Palmer built this hotel and bar in 1901 after the old Sauk Centre House burned down the year before. It would open to much praise and be the premier place to stay in the area for many years.

Since it was the first place to have electricity in town, the Palmer House was a major attraction from its inception. And its location, close to the train station, meant it was quite popular with traveling businessmen visiting town. The Palmer family lived on the premises, along with their two children, and they kept a clean hotel. Writer Sinclair Lewis even worked there for two summers as a desk clerk, and he would later model his fictitious Minniemashie House (in the novel Main Street) after the Palmer House.

After the hotel was sold in 1916, an addition was built, adding twenty more rooms to the property. And in 1993, an extensive remodel was done to turn the original thirty-eight rooms with shared baths to nineteen rooms, each with its own bathroom. The on-site pub and restaurant saw a complete makeover as well.

These days, the Palmer House is just as popular as it ever was—only now it’s not the typical socialites who are hanging out at the hotel. It’s the paranormal crowd. Offering historical and ghost tours, as well as regular events that cater to the ghost hunting and spiritual crowd, the hotel draws visitors from all over the world who want to experience the spooky happenings there.

Current owners Brett and Kelley Freese have made it their mission to document as much of the activity happening in the hotel as possible. And it’s a lot! In fact, there’s so much that I stand no chance of even scratching the surface of what’s happening there in this article. I will, however, entice you with a few of the more well-known stories.

When it comes to staying in haunted rooms, the main three for you to consider are Rooms 11, 17, and 22. Room 11 has a playful spirit who loves to interact with guests who stay there. It’s said a cold spot will suddenly appear, then the ghost will touch you. And you don’t want to sleep with your feet out of the covers, or you may wake up to the sensation of a hand running down your leg.

Local legend says that Room 17 is visited by two different ghosts. The first is a female entity known as Lucy. She seems to dislike men and will let them know this by slamming doors, moving items, and dropping the temperature in the room. She also likes to sit in the chairs beside the bed and gets particular grouchy if guests fill both of them at the same time (now she has nowhere to sit).

The second spirit in this room is a man dressed in 1920s attire. While he usually is content with just stomping up and down the hallway, his apparition has appeared to unsuspecting residents of this room, too. One person
